Frequently Asked Questions

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program

What is ConTex?

The ConTex office was established by The University of Texas System to support a program of cooperation with Mexico's National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT). This new program will expand current collaboration with CONACYT and many other first-rate academic institutions in Mexico.

What is the ConTex post-doctoral program?

The post-doctoral fellowship will give opportunities to PIs in Mexico and the U.S. to add to their research capacity with scientists and scholars of the highest caliber. Post-doctoral candidates must apply directly to ConTex, after agreeing with PI on details of the proposal.

Who can apply?

Applicants must have no more than five years of post-graduate experience, and must graduate no later than August 2017.  Mexican nationals may apply for a post-doc fellowship at a UT System institution, and graduates of UT System doctoral programs may apply for a post-doc fellowship at a Mexican institution.

What does the fellowship cover?

Upon selection, post-doctoral fellows will be provided a one-year salary. Post-docs may be awarded a second year of support, provided there are sufficient funds and on recommendation from associated PI.

What is the salary support amount and basis?

$47,476 USD, annually, plus coverage of local medical insurance costs.

How do I apply for a ConTex Post-doctoral Fellowship?

See the details for the application packet in our guide.

Is there a specific number of fellowships assigned to each UT system institution?

No.  There will be up to 10 fellowships per year.

Should applicants be part of other ConTex programs (like the Collaborative Research Fund)?

They do not have to be, and may be “stand-alone” applications.  It could, though, enhance the strength of both the Post-Doc and the Collaborative Research Fund applications, if they are connected in compelling ways.  The evaluation of the post-doc, however, will be done independently of that of the collaborative research fund applications.

What criteria will be applied for the award of fellowships?

The following is not an exhaustive list, but does provide the primary criteria:

·         Quality of proposal:

o   contribution to current body of knowledge,

o   experience and expertise of post-doctoral candidate,

o   experience and expertise of the host scientist/scholar,

o   coherence and clarity of work plan,

o   likelihood of completing all research goals,

·         Impact of proposed research on economic development and welfare of Texas/Mexico;

·         Ability to leverage current resources and infrastructure for increased impact and visibility;

·         Probability to attract future support of other funding agencies;

·         For list of areas of primary interest for research, please see our call for proposals;

If you have further questions, please contact Dr. David Vassar, Director of Programs (210-458-5548; david.vassar@utsa.edu)

How will funds be managed?

ConTex will facilitate salary payments directly to post-docs.

Is there a deadline to apply for the fellowship?

Yes. Proposals must be submitted by 6 p.m. (CST) on March 24, 201.
